Forever Known

Questions

Getting started

What is Forever Known?

Forever Known is a place to record and preserve personal memories and stories in a person's own words, photos, and voice, and to share them with the people you choose. You can build a story for yourself, or for someone you love.

Who is Forever Known for?

Anyone with a story worth keeping. Many people build their own, so their family hears things in their own voice one day. Others build a story with or for a parent or grandparent while there is still time, or create a lasting place to remember someone who has passed.

How do I begin a story?

Sign in with your email. There is no password to remember: we send you a one-time code. From there you can start a story, answer gentle guided questions, and add photos, audio, or video whenever a memory comes to mind.

Do I need a password to sign in?

No. Forever Known uses passwordless sign-in. Enter your email and we send you a one-time code to confirm it is you. There is nothing to create, forget, or have stolen.

Is Forever Known an app or a website?

Both, in a sense. It runs in any web browser on your phone, tablet, or computer, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. There is nothing to download from an app store.

Can I create more than one story?

Yes. You can keep several stories under one account, for example your own alongside one for a parent or grandparent, and switch between them at any time.

Building a story

What can I add to a story?

Written memories, photos, audio recordings, and video. You can jot a quick note, upload old photographs, or record someone telling a story in their own voice, whatever fits the moment.

How do the guided questions work?

If a blank page feels hard, Forever Known offers gentle prompts to draw memories out, one question at a time. You can answer in writing or by recording your voice, skip any that do not fit, and always add your own.

Can I record in my own voice?

Yes, and it is one of the most meaningful things you can do. Record answers or whole stories in your own voice and we keep the audio alongside the words. We can also create a written transcript so it is easy to read and search.

Can I write out a full life story?

Yes. Alongside individual memories, you can write a longer life story or biography that ties them together, and edit it any time as more memories surface.

Can I add my own questions?

Absolutely. The prompts are a starting point, not a script. Add your own questions and answer whatever matters most to you or your family.

Sharing and privacy

Who can see my memories?

You decide, memory by memory. Each memory is private to you unless you choose to share it. Only the memories you mark to share appear on a shared link or QR page.

How do I share a story with family?

Every story has a private link you can send to the people you choose, and you can invite family members to view or add to it. You control who has access and can change it at any time.

What are keepsake tags and QR codes?

A keepsake tag is a small QR code that opens a story when scanned, so a physical keepsake, a frame, a plaque, or a card, can lead straight to the memories. Only the parts of the story you have made shareable will appear.

What is the difference between a storyteller, a contributor, and a keeper?

The storyteller owns the story. A contributor can add their own memories to it, which is lovely for gathering a whole family's recollections. A keeper helps care for the story over time, including if the storyteller is no longer able to. You choose who holds each role.

Can I keep a story or a memory completely private?

Yes. A memory marked private is for your eyes only. We take this seriously: private memories are never opened by our team as a matter of course, even for support. Support works from technical details, not from your content.

Can I remove access I have shared?

Yes. You can change or remove anyone's access to a story at any time. Roles are always yours to adjust.

Owning your memories

Do I own my memories? Can I take them with me?

Always. You own everything you create. At any time you can download a complete copy, and you can edit or delete anything you have added.

What exactly is the Memory Box?

The Memory Box is your whole story in one downloadable file: every memory, photo, and recording, together with a page that opens in any web browser, even with no internet and no account. It is made so your family can open it on their own, decades from now.

How do I download a copy of everything?

From within a story, choose to download the Memory Box. It gathers everything as it stands that day into a single file you can keep somewhere safe or hand to family.

Can I bring a Memory Box back later?

Yes. A Memory Box you saved can be brought back in. It always returns as a new story, so nothing you currently have is changed or written over.

What happens to a story if it becomes inactive?

The story stays. If a story is not active it remains as a quiet, read-only page rather than disappearing, and your Memory Box download is always available so the memories are truly yours. Keeping a story fully active is what the credits below are for.

Paying for a story

How does keeping a story going work?

Hosting a story is covered by credits, and anyone who cares about the story, not only the person who started it, can add credits to keep it active. Credits are one simple thing: time. They are non-refundable and are earned when purchased.

Are credits refundable, and do they expire?

Credits are non-refundable and are considered earned at the time of purchase. They do not expire. They simply extend how long a story stays fully active.

Can someone other than me pay to keep a story going?

Yes. Anyone, a family member, a friend, even a visitor moved by the story, can contribute time to keep it active. A contribution is a gift of time to the story; it does not give the payer access to private memories or any control over the story.

Can I prepay for several years at once?

Yes. You can prepay for multiple years, a thoughtful way to secure a story well into the future. Longer terms are available, and some are offered at a better rate.

Do you offer discounts, vouchers, or gifts?

Yes. Time can be given as a gift, and we offer voucher codes, including for organizations that wish to sponsor stories for the people they serve. Please reach out if you would like to arrange something for a group.

What happens if a payment does not go through?

Nothing dramatic, and nothing disappears. Paid stories quietly build up reserve time, so a missed payment is covered rather than punished, and we simply let you know. A story stays visible and never goes dark over a billing hiccup.

Voice, video and AI

How do you handle voice and video?

With care. We record voice and video only after you consent, and we never use them to identify anyone or for advertising. See our Voice and Biometric Policy for the details.

How does Forever Known use AI?

In a few gentle, optional ways: to suggest questions that help draw memories out, to turn recordings into written transcripts, and to offer summaries. AI can make mistakes, so please review anything it produces before relying on it.

Do you use my memories to train AI, or to identify me?

No. We do not use your memories or recordings to train AI models, and we do not use voice or video to identify anyone. Your memories are used to provide the service to you and the people you choose, nothing else.

Legacy and remembrance

What happens to a story after someone passes away?

The story becomes a lasting place to remember them. A keeper you have named can continue to care for it, and the memories, especially those in their own voice, remain for family to return to.

Can I prepare messages to be shared in the future?

Yes. You can prepare messages and memories to be shared later, on a chosen date, at a future event, or after your passing, so your words reach the people you love at the right moment.

Can I name someone to look after my story?

Yes. You can name a keeper to look after your story over time. It is a simple way to make sure your memories stay cared for beyond your own hands.

Your data and rights

Can I edit or delete a memory, or my whole account?

Yes. You can edit or delete any individual memory, and you can delete your account entirely. When you delete something we remove it, including from routine backups, within a set window.

How is my information kept secure?

We protect your information with encrypted connections and access controls, and we keep it only as long as your account is active or as needed to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, which is another reason the Memory Box puts a copy in your own hands.

How do I get a copy of my data, or ask you to delete it?

You can download a full copy through the Memory Box at any time. For a formal export or deletion of your information, email us at help@beforeverknown.com and we will take care of it.

Do you sell my information?

No. We never sell, lease, or trade your information or your memories, and we do not use them for advertising. We share only with the providers who help run the service, or when the law requires it.

Is Forever Known only for adults?

Yes. Forever Known is intended for adults, and you must be at least 18 to create an account. It is not directed to children.

How do I get help or report a problem?

Inside the app you can report a problem in a few taps, by note or even a quick voice memo, and it reaches us with the details we need. You can also email us any time at help@beforeverknown.com.
